St. Francis Weekly Email January 30 - February 3

1/31/2023

Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,
Prayer
Lord God, we kneel before you and worship you, for you do mighty deeds in heaven and on earth and allow us to become your children and your servants. You have done great things for many people, enabling them to serve you, and you will do still more. For you have promised that all our paths will be made straight. You have promised that all we do may be a service to you through Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, whom we follow. He will be revealed to the whole world, so that the nations will be called to serve you and your will may be done on earth as in heaven. Praised be your name, Lord our God! We open our hearts to you. In death and in life we are yours. Amen.

Christian Unity
Thank you to Pastor Derek Baker, Rev. Beverly Brazier and Fr. Szwagrzyk for their participation in last week’s Christian Unity liturgy. We are happy that they could celebrate with us.

Parking
A reminder to parents and students regarding parking, morning drop offs and afternoon pickups. The drop off loop is on the north side of the building; the first turn off when travelling on Duke Rd from Lewes Blvd. We are asking everyone to use this location to ensure safety (the staff parking lot is not designed for drop offs). We would also like to remind students to park their cars in the student parking lot. Thank you all for your cooperation in this matter.

Social Media
Over the past month, we have become aware of several inappropriate and offensive messages being posted on a Snapchat group of which many students are members. These messages are being sent over the weekend while students are on their own time, but the effects of the messages are being felt at St. Francis during the week.
Students are bullying and teasing their classmates as well as using racial slurs. We have spoken to all classes about appropriate social media use and, as we become aware of inappropriate comments directed at other students, we have disciplined the students posting the messages and notified their parents/guardians. However, we are not able to monitor our students on their phones outside of school hours.
Please take some time this week to discuss with your student how to use social media appropriately.
Positive social media behaviour for everyone:
  • Be nice. Mean behavior is not OK. Make it clear that you expect your kids to treat others with respect, and to never post hurtful or embarrassing messages. And ask them to always tell you about any harassing or bullying messages that others post.
  • Follow the "WWGS?" (What Would Grandma Say?) rule. Teach kids not to share anything on social media that they wouldn't want their teachers, college admissions officers, future bosses — and yes, grandma — to see.
  • Never send inappropriate pictures or engage in sexual conversations with peers or strangers.
        Never. Never. Never.
Excerpted from: https://youthfirstinc.org/social-media-safety-tips-for-children/
Suggestions for parents / guardians:
  • Model good behaviour on your own social media accounts.
  • Set screen time limits and set rules on when screens are appropriate to use.
  • Teach your child the value of “unplugging” from devices for technology-free time. Social media can be exciting, but it should be considered entertainment. Remind your child that no message is so important that it can’t wait until the morning.
  • Explain that Snapchat posts are NOT temporary, as they were intended to be. People can take screenshots of a photo before it disappears.

St. Francis Weekly Email January 23-27

1/24/2023

Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,
Prayer
Lord, we thank you for the many colours, cultures, and customs
that we share in this world.
In our differences, unite us by your love.
Enable us to act together to uphold life
and to make this world a just and peaceful household
for all humanity.
Today we ask you: O God, hear our prayer and grant us your peace. Amen

Christian Unity
The traditional date for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is January 18-25. The octave (eight days) has been celebrated continuously since 1894, but was a dream of many Christian leaders since the early years of the 19th century. This week we will celebrate Christian Unity when we gather for our liturgy on Wednesday.

Grad
We are looking for Grade 11 students and parents to help with Grad!  Traditionally, the Grad Mass is followed by a reception with some light snacks and beverages.  This is usually hosted by students in grade 11 with the help of their parents.  We are also looking to create a registered St. Francis Grad society to help aid in fundraising efforts.  This will benefit next year's grad class, so we would like some of this year's grade 11 parents to help take the lead on this.  If you can assist with either of these efforts, please email tanner.cassidy@yesnet.yk.ca

Data Privacy Week
The Yukon Information and Privacy Commissioner invites parents and educators to use materials on the website https://www.yukonombudsman.ca/yukon-information-and-privacy-commissioner/youth/teaching-tools to discuss digital literacy and online privacy. This link has a webcast, graphic novel, discussion guide and blog to assist families in leading a ‘family tech talk’ with youth about how they can protect themselves when they’re spending time online.

No School on Friday, January 13, 2023

It was brought to our attention that the exam schedule sent home before the break did not include Friday the 13th. Note: there are no classes or exams on Friday. Many students were absent due to illness in December. Thursday and Friday are both make-up days for exams and/or assessments that students were not able to complete during scheduled times. If a student needs to write an exam or submit an assignment, there is an opportunity to do this on Thursday and Friday.

St. Francis Weekly Update January 9 to 13

1/9/2023

Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,

Prayer
Gracious and loving God, you are always near to us when we call, yet we frequently allow our busyness to keep us from spending quality time with you. Continue to call us to prayer and strengthen our desire to respond in the best way we know how. By the grace of your Spirit, may our efforts lead to a regular discipline of prayer that deepens our faith and increases our trust in your love and goodness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Exam Week
  • The week of January 9th to 13th is exam week. There are no regular classes scheduled during this week. Click here to see the exam schedule. We have asked students to attend their exams, and leave once finished. The first day of regularly scheduled classes is on Tuesday January 17, the beginning of second semester.
Exam Week Expectations

  • Students are expected to refrain from talking, whispering or gesturing during the testing period, even if they are finished writing.
  • Students who benefit from the work of others, who assist others with exam information, or who bring in information for the purpose of assistance on an exam may receive a mark of 0%.
  • Students may be removed from the exam room if they do not to comply with the basic rules of exam writing and they may be assigned a mark of 0% or marked on what has been completed, at the teacher’s discretion.

St. Francis Clubs
The purpose of the St. Francis Student Government is to involve students in school affairs. With the help of staff, students learn to make responsible decisions within a democratic framework. The focus is on building community, positive relationships and school spirit. Twelve energetic student leaders were elected this year to represent the student body, and implement the most incredible student led activities. This inclusive group welcomes participation from students year round. So far this year, Student Government has:
  • addressed concerns brought forward by students regarding the school washrooms;
  • begun to create new common areas where students can gather in the school;
  • planned a pep rally to celebrate the volleyball season
  • prepared themes for the Spirit Week before Christmas;
  • organized a Junior Christmas Dance (which was a huge success!)
Upcoming ideas include:
  • implementing a suggestion box for students to more easily voice their concerns and ideas;
  • organizing a Senior dance for St. Valentine’s Day.
Stay tuned for loads more school spirit events in the coming months!
