It has been a wonderful few days welcoming our students back into the building, and we have had a smooth start to the school year. Students are now settling into their routines, and the school has an atmosphere of positive energy and excitement for learning. It has been wonderful to re-connect with our returning students and to welcome many new students to our school. 


Prayer 
Loving God, thank you for the rest and relaxation we enjoyed over the summer. 
Today, we pray for our children as they begin their new school year. 
Bless them with joy at seeing friends, and a love of learning. 
Watch over all who learn, replacing fear with joy, anxiety with peace, and tiredness with energy. 
Grant teachers' wisdom, patience, and joy in serving their students. 
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. 


Parking 
A reminder to parents and students regarding parking, morning drop offs and afternoon pickups. The drop off loop is on the north side of the building; the first turn off when travelling on Duke Rd from Lewes Blvd. We are asking everyone to use this location to ensure safety (the staff parking lot is not designed for drop offs). We would also like to remind students to park their cars in the student parking lot. Thank you all for your cooperation in this matter. 


City and School Bus

Cafeteria 
The cafeteria is up and running (and the food has been great).  This year, we're lucky to have cooks from YFNED running the cafeteria.  For students wishing to purchase meals, they can purchase a card for $20 at the front office.  We can take cash or an e-transfer to sfacss@yukon.ca (please include your child's name if e-transferring).  Lunches are $4 and, starting next week,  breakfasts will be $2.  If cost is prohibitive, please let the office know. 


Field Trips 
Teachers are planning many off-site experiential activities for this semester. Please look out for any field trip forms that students may bring home, and promptly fill them in, sign them and return them to the school. Thank you. 


Outstanding School Materials 
There are many students who have not yet returned textbooks, library resources and English novels which were used last year.  These items remain on a student’s record and may prevent them from having access to new resources.  We ask for your help in having these items returned ASAP.  


Picture Day – September 8 and 9 
Important Changes to School Photos This Year - Both Eyes Open Photography 
We have updated our systems to streamline our photography and ordering process. Please review the following key updates: 
  
  • No Order Envelopes: To eliminate data entry errors and lost forms, order envelopes will not be used. Photoshoots take place first, and we manufacture customized proof contact sheets that will be delivered to the school within 3–5 days after the shoot. The schools will then distribute the contact sheets to the students to take home.   
  • Contact sheets: Please read thoroughly the instructions on the front and back of the contact sheet. Each contact sheet can have up to 8 images as thumbnails to review and a QR code with login instructions. Please note often additional images can be viewed online.   
  • No School Collection: Please do not send orders or payments to your school. Online ordering is automated and highly recommended (supporting credit cards, Visa debit, and e-transfers). Cash or cheque orders must be mailed or dropped off in the after-hours drop box at Unit 4 - 511 Main Street, Whitehorse, YT, Y1A 2B8. 
  • New Studio Location: Our town studio is now located at Unit 4, 511 Main Street, Whitehorse (between the Hyatt and the Best Western). 
  • Improved Tracking & Portals: Students are now managed via a centralized system. Using student numbers, photos are securely matched and uploaded to individual online student portals. To log in, you will require the code that is on the contact sheet and your child's date of birth.  
  • Order Status Tracking: You can view live tracking updates on your order by logging into your student portal and checking the "order summary" section. 
  • Integrated Processing: Online orders connect directly to our professional lab in Edmonton for faster fulfillment. 
  • Enhanced Security: Accessing the online portal requires a secure code (The security code is provided to parents/guardians on the contact sheet). To protect student privacy, excessive login attempts will be temporarily blocked. If you lose this contact sheet, please contact us at info@botheyesopenphoto.com so a new code can be emailed to you. This makes the previous code invalid securing the account.  






St. Francis Clubs and Athletics  
There are many clubs and sports teams that you can join here at St. Francis. As mentioned in the assembly on the first day of school, soccer and volleyball are just around the corner and some clubs are having their first meetings this week. Students who are interested should keep an eye out for posters in the hallways or announcements on the intercom that will tell you what is happening and where. Details will also be posted on Microsoft teams in the St. Francis Hallway.  


Coaches 
Calling all parents interested in coaching!  We have a thriving athletics program here at St. Francis and we'd love to have parents be involved.  Currently, we have staff members volunteering to help with all of our volleyball teams, but they're always happy for more help.  We're also looking for coaches for the basketball season, if that's more your speed.  If you have any interest and expertise, please contact dwayne.stoker@yesnet.yk.ca.   
  
Grad  
The grad website is www.stfrancisgrad.com. Grads, please visit this website to stay informed. Also, grad parents, ensure that the school has a current email address for you on file, as that is how most grad related information will be sent out.  You will be notified when the first meeting is scheduled.  Until then, stay tuned. 
  
Skills Room 
The Skills Room is a great place to drop in should students need an alternate place to work before school, at lunch or after school. The Skills Room opens at 8:00am, is open all through lunch and after school except for on Fridays.  


Student Tutoring  
All St. Francis students can receive tutoring from other students for assistance in course work, assignments or organizational skills. The students requesting tutors are self-identified or identified by their parents or teachers. To receive tutoring the student simply needs to fill in an application in the Skills Room (Room 3).   
Students in Grades 10, 11, or 12 can apply to be a tutor. Tutors can earn either service-learning hours or an hourly wage. Peer tutors are paid on a graduated scale, which increases with grade level and number of hours tutored. Potential tutors need to come in person to the Skills room and fill in an application. Students will be matched one on one by the Learning Assistance Teachers.  
At the present time, there are senior students who are experienced tutors who are willing to work with grade 8 and 9 students before school, at lunch time, or after school. If you have a junior student who would benefit from some academic support, organizational support, or even peer mentorship, please have them fill out the bright yellow form from the skills room and give it to Ms. Cann. For more information, or to get the form, parents can also email Ms. Cann at: amanda.cann@yesnet.yk.ca 


Agenda Planners 
All grade 8 and 9 students have just been given an agenda/planner that is specifically designed for students in junior high school. Ms. Cann led all classes through tips and tricks for how to effectively use this tool to help manage their time and help prioritize tasks. One tip was to first add in all the fun aspects of your life into the planner such as birthdays, sporting events, extra curriculars and family gatherings. Then, start by getting into the rhythm of putting in school tasks.  Please ask your student to see their planner and discuss with them how they plan to make the best use of this tool. If you have a student in the senior grades who would like a planner, ask them to come see Ms. Cann in the Skills Room. 
Most sessions on time management, effective study habits, work completion and test writing will be delivered to grade 8 and 9 students over the fall semester. 


Vision Screening 
To all parents of grade 8 students. It is tradition here at St. Francis to do a basic vision screen for each of our grade 8's.  At this age, teenagers' eyes and vision can change very quickly, and we use it as a tool to help decipher who may need to see an eye doctor, have their prescriptions re-evaluated or have preferential seating in the classroom.  We aim to get this done through the month of September and will send home a summary of the results during an October or November mail out. Please note that these vision screens are not intended to replace a traditional vision test with an eye doctor but are done by a staff member who has been given support and training from the vision specialist at the department of education. 


Sacramental Preparation: Confirmation 
St. Francis School, in collaboration with Fr. Bartek and Sacred Heart Parish, will be offering Confirmation prep during PLC afternoons. If you have a student in grades 8–12 who has not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation and would like to join us during plc (every other Wednesday from 2:10-3:15pm), please email michelle.olejarz@yesnet.yk.ca to register. 


St. Francis of Assisi School Council 
The St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School Council would like to extend a warm welcome back to all our returning families, students, and staff, and a special greeting to those joining our school community for the first time. We hope your summer was filled with rest, joyful moments, and time spent with loved ones.

SFA school council is looking for volunteers for a committee to help coordinate funding opportunities to make a mosaic mural of our school namesake a reality this year. If you are able to share your time and talent- even only a little- please contact sfoa@gmail.com

SFA school council, along with the other Catholic school councils, are members of the Catholic Education Association of Yukon (CEAY). The purpose of this Association is to be a place for discussion and shared vision on topics that impact our three Catholic schools, in collaboration with the non voting members, which include: school administrators and religious education coordinators as well as the Episcopal Corporation and parish representatives. CEAY provides professional development opportunities and support to Yukon Catholic School Councils and can represent Yukon Catholic Schools in discussions with the Department and Minister of Education.  
Each member council nominates two persons to be the Directors of the Association for a two year term. One of the nominees must be a sitting member of the school council but the second nominee only requires the support of the council to be put forward. This September we will be nominating two people to a new term with CEAY. 
If you would like to be considered to participate in the leadership of Yukon Catholic Schools in this role, please contact sfoacouncil@gmail.com with your interest as soon as possible and no later than September 7.

Welcome to the start of the 2026-2027 school year. As we gather to begin a new academic term, our heart goes out to our community. We know that recent weeks have brought profound sadness to many families in Whitehorse, and many of our students, staff, and families are grieving. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our administration, teachers, or counseling staff if your child needs extra care or if you would like guidance on how to navigate difficult conversations at home. We stand together in compassion and care for one another.
 
Prayer 
Lord, we bring before You this new school year, asking for Your grace, blessing, and peace.
Fill our minds with a desire to learn, grow, and seek truth in all things.
Grant us wisdom to understand our studies and patience when things are difficult.

Attendance Procedures 
Attendance in classes is the biggest contributor to student success and we take attendance tracking seriously. It is the responsibility of all Parent/Guardians to inform the office of all excused absences from school. The office will call home for unexcused students missing first block. Automated phone calls are generated to call home for any unexcused absences after the school day has finished.  
Please inform the office of any absences by calling 667-5901 and speaking with any office staff, if you call after school hours you can leave a voicemail. Or, if it is more convenient, please feel free to email us at sfacss@yukon.ca. 
 
Personal Mobile Device Policy
The new personal mobile device policy is in effect. During this morning’s assembly, students were given an overview of the policy and reminder of the expectations. You can learn more about the Yukon-wide policy by clicking here.
 
At St. Francis, along with the other Whitehorse secondary school, students are not permitted to have their cell phones in class without explicit teacher permission.  Students will be asked to return phones to their locker after a first offense, while phones will go to an administrator for
 
X-block 
X-block and PLC dates for the first semester will be shared in the next weekly email home, and on the school website. Wednesday August 26, x-block is 1. 
 
Cafeteria
We are happy to share that the National School Food Program pilot hot lunch service, will begin here at SFA on August 24, 2026. The program is offered in partnership with the Yukon First Nation Education Directorate (YFNED). 
As a part of this pilot program, we will use a food card model for lunch service. Students will be able to purchase subsidized lunch cards through the school’s main office at a reduced cost. These cards can then be used in the cafeteria to purchase meals
 
Learning Commons
The Learning Commons will be open daily from 8:15 am to 3:45 pm.

We would like to congratulate our Grade 12 graduating class. Many of them have had a remarkable year! We wish them all the best as they embark on their future journeys!
We’d also like to welcome the new Grade 8 families to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Secondary and look forward to them joining us in August. For those students who are moving we wish you all the best in your new schools and community. 
 
As we leave for the summer, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our staff. Their dedication to student success and the many extras they provide mean a great deal to the students and make this a wonderful place to learn and grow. We would also like to thank the students, parents and others in our community for contributing their time, energy and positive efforts to supporting everyone who attends St. Francis of Assisi!

  • School supply lists for 2026-27 are posted on the school website. You can find them here.
  • Schedules for incoming grade 8s will be handed out at the orientation on August 21st.  Grade 9-12 students will receive their semester one schedules with report cards.  Please do not contact the school to make schedule changes over the summer as we will not be making any changes until after we return in the fall

SWIS Services
Just a quick heads-up that the final week for SWIS services at our school is this week, May 27th. School Bus Registration
An email was sent to all Whitehorse school families on May 22nd regarding 2026-27 school bus registration. Families can register online at Yukon.ca/bus or on the Standard Bus Yukon website. This year, registration is managed by Standard Bus Yukon and must be completed online. Paper applications are no longer accepted. Whitehorse high school students can choose to ride the school bus or receive a free City of Whitehorse transit pass. They cannot register for both. Please register your child by July 1, 2026.
 
Exam Schedule

Please review the schedule carefully and keep the following important details in mind:
  • Exam Schedule Conflicts: If students notice a direct conflict - such as having two exams scheduled at the exact same time - please contact Mr. Cassidy immediately so we can arrange an alternative time to write.
  • Grades 10 to 12 Location Update: For our Grade 10, 11, and 12 students, we are returning to our traditional, pre-COVID group writing format. All exams, unless otherwise specified, will take place together in the small gym (for separate settings – contact Ms. Calnan to arrange).
  • Grades 8 and 9 exams will remain as they have been, in classrooms. Students who need a separate setting as outlined in their plan will have one (arranged by Ms. Cann).
  • Grade 10 students will need to do the Literacy 10 exam on one of the mornings (Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday). Only grads who have not yet completed their necessary grad assessments will need to write on Friday. This will be scheduled by one of our counsellors.
  • Attendance Policy: It is the expectation that all students will write their exams on the specific date and time they are scheduled. The designated "make-up day" is strictly reserved for extenuating circumstances (such as illness or emergencies) and is not a free-choice option to postpone an exam.
  • Students missing an exam due to an illness will need to provide medical documentation to be permitted to write the exam at an alternative time.

Red Dress Day 
May 5, 2026, marked the 16th anniversary of the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, also known as Red Dress Day. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the need to address the violence still faced by many in Canada. We recognize the courage and strength of families, survivors, and communities who continue to advocate for the dignity and justice of their loved ones.

CEAY Candidate Meet and Greet 
School Council candidates will have the opportunity to speak with electors in an informal and relaxed setting of small group or individual conversations in a mix-and-mingle style event. If you are interested in engaging in polite conversation with the candidates running for St. Francis of Assisi School Council, please join us on May 7th at 7:00 pm in the CYO Hall. 
 
PARISH TALK FOR PARENTS: How do I raise my kids Catholic?! 
Many Catholic parents worry: will my children keep the faith when they grow up? Join us Friday, May 8th at 7pm in the CYO Hall as Dr. Brett Salkeld will share key insights from both the Church and contemporary research on parenting—showing how certain parenting styles not only make it more likely that children remain in the Church, but also help them become happier, more resilient, and capable of strong relationships. 
Dr. Brett Salkeld is Archdiocesan Theologian for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Regina, where he is responsible for deacon formation.  
 
Opportunities Yukon presentation about student employment 
Students and families are invited to come to an Employability Skills Program presentation happening next Wednesday, May 13 at 12:15 pm here at St Francis in the Textiles room.   
This presentation is for students and parents of students, who identify as having a barrier to employment (could be mental, physical or mental health, such as ADHD).  The presentation is about a PAID training program offered this summer for youth. Please contact Opportunities Yukon if you have any questions.

Statement from the Minister of Education
On Thursday, April 9the Minister of Education, Honourable Scott Kent, delivered an official acknowledgement and apology in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. This address was directed to former students and families who experienced harm at Jack Hulland Elementary School between 2007 and 2022. We recognize that this announcement, and the apology itself, may bring up difficult emotions and memories for members of our school community.  If you feel like your child needs support following this apology, please reach out and we will connect them with our counselling staff of the school Wellness Specialist.
 
Student Led Conferences
Report cards will be available for pick up during Student Led Conferences on Wednesday April 22nd from 3:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Please wait until 3:30 to come, so that teachers are able to set up their spaces for your arrival. See you there!
 
BC Assessments
A reminder that all grade 10 students will be writing their Numeracy assessments next week on April 21st. Ms. Segriff has posted where the students will be writing during each day – remind students to be on time and to check Teams hallway for more information. Saint Francis is happy to announce the reopening of our school cafeteria on Monday, March 30, where YFNED staff will be serving a healthy breakfast and lunch daily.
All meals will be on a first come, first served basis.  A limited number of complimentary breakfasts will be prepared daily and may include rice, sausage, wraps, croissants, and others.  Lunch will be as it was before the closure.  Students will be able to purchase a single lunch card for $5, or a five lunch card for $20.  However, students who are currently on the YFNED list will receive a five lunch card at no cost.  When that card is used up, another will be issued.  YFNED has also extended this offer to those who may be experiencing financial difficulty.  If you would like your student to receive a card, please call (867-667-5901) or email (sfacss@yukon.ca) the school.  Your request will remain confidential.
We would like to thank YFNED for their flexibility and efforts as we navigated several system related issues in the cafeteria this year.  We also want to thank the Facilities Division at the Department of Education for their assistance throughout these challenges.
