2023 Yearbooks are on sale!

3/9/2023

Greetings Parent/Guardian,
The 2023 Yearbooks are on sale! This will be the first St. Francis of Assisi yearbook ever. Not only are you getting a memento of all the amazing things we do here - you’re also getting a piece of history. For Yearbook 2022, we had a sizable waiting list at the beginning of this year for people who did not order one when they had the opportunity. Unfortunately, most people on that list did not get the 2022 Yearbook. We only receive enough books to fill orders placed on time. I would love if everyone here at SFACSS had a Yearbook in their hands! Let’s make it happen this year.
Don’t miss out this year. If you bought a book last year, keep that collection going! I’m sure your children would love to have a chronology of their high school life. As a practicing photographer I’ve been dedicated to capturing as many moments as possible around the school this year. The photos taken this year are incredible. We also have a passionate Yearbook team who is striving to represent every student in their best light. Whether your child is in Grade 8, or a Grade 12 Graduate, the Yearbook is the best way to retain the incredible memories of this year of their life.
The Yearbook costs $40 and all orders must be in by May 26th. Orders ship in September and are picked up at the school. Click the link below! Or scan the QR code on any Yearbook 2023 posters around the school. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Parent Information Session Tonight for students in grade 9

2/27/2023

We are beginning our planning for the 2023-2024 school year and will be distributing course planning worksheets to all students during the week of  February 27th to March 3rd.

Currently, the Yukon graduation program begins in Gr. 10, so it is recommended that all Gr. 9 students and parents/guardians understand the graduation requirements before choosing courses for next year.

We would like to invite all Gr. 9 students, parents/guardians to an important information evening where the graduation program will be outlined, the various options students have for courses such as Mathematics or second languages will be described in detail, and any questions relating to graduation requirements will be answered.

Grade 10 and 11 parents who would have further questions regarding course selection are welcome to attend; however, this session focuses mainly on the transition from grade 9 to 10.

This meeting will be on Monday February 27th at 6:30 p.m. in the learning commons.

You also have the option of joining via zoom:

St. Francis Weekly Email February 27 to March 3

2/27/2023

Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,

Prayer
God of the hungry times, God of the difficult times,
God of all the times of our lives, we need to talk.
Sometimes it’s difficult to understand the direction we need to go.
With all the choices we have in our lives, sometimes we’re not sure
when to say “yes,” or when to say “no.”
So we ask for your guidance. We ask for wisdom. We ask for Spirit.
In our worship, in our work, in our choices, in our lives.
May it be so, loving God!
Amen.

St. Francis Weekly Email February 20-24

2/20/2023

Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,

Lenten Prayer
Almighty and Everlasting God,
You have given the human race
Jesus Christ our Saviour as a model of humility.
He fulfilled Your Will by becoming man
And giving His life on the Cross.
Help us to bear witness to You
By following His example of suffering
And make us worthy to share in His Resurrection.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son.
Amen.

What is Lent?
Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It is a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection at Easter. During Lent we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. Lent can be an incredibly rewarding time in our faith lives. Please join us, if you are available, for our Liturgy on Wednesday between 10:00 and 11:00 in the small gym.

Shrove Tuesday Feast
St. Francis Families, please join us for a free Pancake Breakfast Feast on Tuesday, February 21 from 7:30 to 9:00 am, provided by SFACSS Administration with generous support from Yukon First Nations Education Directorate!  It will be held in the school cafeteria, and everyone is welcome!

Pink Shirt Day
Pink Shirt Day is Wednesday, February 22, 2023. Pink Shirt Day began in 2007 when a student in Nova Scotia was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. It has now become a national day of anti-bullying across Canada and other countries around the world! Bullying, cyberbullying and harassment jeopardize learning and can severely impact a child’s mental, emotional and physical health. On Wednesday, St. Francis students and staff are encouraged to wear pink to signify the stand against bullying. For additional support, please see the resources in the following links:
  • For Parents https://www.pinkshirtday.ca/support-for-parents-teachers.
  • For Youth https://www.pinkshirtday.ca/support-for-youth.

Reminder of School Expectations
We have been visiting all classrooms to remind students of a few of the St. Francis student expectations. Here is a list for you of the ones that we feel need to be addressed so that you can help us in keeping students aware of them.

Lates: we are seeing more students arriving to classes after the final bell. This is disruptive to the learning of all students in the class. Obviously, at times, arriving late to school cannot be avoided due to late buses or traffic. We encourage all students who are at school on time to listen for the warning bell and move quickly towards their class so that they are in their seat with their supplies when the final bell goes. This goes for all classes during the day, not just the first class of the day. If we see a particular student showing a trend of being continually late, they will stay in at lunch to do schoolwork for the time that they have missed.

Students leaving school early to catch the City Bus
Our school day ends at 3:14 pm. There is a City Bus that departs the Duke Rd. bus stop at 3:05 pm. Students who have parent/guardian permission are permitted to leave their class early to catch this bus. Please email the school at sfacss@yukon.ca if you wish your student to be on this list of students. Students who are not on the list will not be permitted to leave. Note: there is a City Bus that departs from Duke Road at 3:25 pm and buses that leave the stop on Lewes Blvd at 3:27 pm and 3:47 pm. Click here to see the transit schedule.

Hats: as stated in the SFACSS School Handbook section 7 (http://www.sfacss.ca/school-documents.html), "Hats or other head coverings (other than those worn for religious reasons) are not to be worn in the school.".  Students must leave hats at home or in their lockers during the school day. We often have fundraising "Hat Day" in which students pay a small fee to wear their hat. Let's keep hat wearing for this special day.

Cell phones: it is up to individual teachers to enforce the use of cell phones in a class. However, as a general rule, cell phones are not to be used during class time. This includes during spare blocks in the Learning Commons. Students will be asked to put the phone away to cut down on distractions.

Grad
We are still looking for parents of grade 11 students who can help with the grad mass reception that will take place on May 31st. This is a St. Francis tradition, however we had to put it on pause during COVID; this year we would really like to bring this tradition back. Please reach out to Mr. Cassidy at tanner.cassidy@yesnet.yk.ca if you think you may be able to help in any capacity.

St. Francis Weekly Email Feb13-17

2/13/2023

Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,

A Valentine Prayer
I said a Valentine prayer for you
and asked the Lord above
to fill your heart and bless your soul
With the precious gift of love.
I asked Him for sincere love
The kind that's meant to stay
Just like the generous love
You give to those you touch each day.
I prayed for love from family
And from every cherished friend
Then I asked the Lord to give you
His love that knows no end.

Reminder: the deadline for the Explore Programme is Wednesday, February 15. Explore is an intensive French-immersion program that is offered during the spring and summer.
