Welcome Back

8/16/2023

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Secondary,

We are looking forward to greeting our students for the 2023-2024 school year. We hope that you all had a restful summer and were able to spend some time with your families. Our staff are ready to receive our students and we wanted to share information regarding the first day of school at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Secondary. The first day of school is on Tuesday August 22nd where students will first meet for an assembly in the gymnasium.

Students will receive their schedules upon leaving the gymnasium and they will go to each of their assigned classes throughout the day to meet their teachers. Students must go to their assigned classes and if they require any schedule changes, they can sign-up for a schedule change in the office. Students who require schedule changes will be called to the office based on the sign-up sheet.

Grade 8 parents/guardians/students:
A reminder that grade 8 student orientation is on Friday August 18th from 10:00-11:30.
School Supplies:
You can find the list for each grade on our school website under “school information” followed by “school documents”.

Bless all our students, teachers, and staff as
they make their way back to their classrooms for another year.
We hope that they feel excitement and joy in the promise of a new start.

Happy June!

Happy June!
As part of an action plan after the Yukon Catholic Schools PD Day on May 1st, the 3 Catholic schools are flying the Progressive Pride flag for the month of June.

At our PD Day, we had a keynote address from Fr. James Martin, an internationally renowned Catholic priest doing focused work in the space of 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion. Through gospel stories and his personal experience working in this field, he helped us understand the profound need for visible inclusion for this community in Catholic churches and schools.  He reiterated research regarding young people who identify in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and who feel their school or church community don’t accept or include them— this community is at significantly higher risk for serious mental health struggles, including depression and suicide ideation, connected directly to not seeing themselves reflected in their world.

Our Church’s world leader, Pope Francis, has publicly thanked and applauded Father James Martin for this important work, along with the organization that Fr. Martin has helped to create, https://outreach.faith/. The front-page article today is called “Can Catholics celebrate Pride Month? Yes, and here’s why.”

Additionally, educators spent part of the Catholic PD Day looking at policies and actions of other jurisdictions that have publicly funded Catholic schools (namely, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto). These districts are responding to the ever-growing research around outcomes for youth in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and these distracts have decided that an impactful and excellent first step is flying the Pride flag during pride month. It is well documented that this visual act of solidarity is significant for this marginalized and at-risk community.

The designer of this revamped Pride flag (Daniel Quasar) intended the colors to represent the following: the colored stripes represented the gay and lesbian community, the light blue, pink and white stripes represent trans and non-binary individuals and the brown and black ones represent marginalized People of Colour (POC) communities. When organizations fly this flag it is a statement of inclusion—“you are welcome in our space”.

Note that the garden-style flagpole at the front door will be used to show our solidarity with other important causes throughout the school year. For example, we will fly The Survivors’ flag in September for Truth and Reconciliation month, a flag for veterans in November, the Black History flag in February for Black History month and a Franco-Yukonnais flag in May for Yukon Francophonie Day. St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Secondary School is committed to creating a community that supports equity, diversity and inclusion.

Please do not hesitate to call the school at 667-5901 if you have any questions or concerns.

Blessings,
The St. Francis of Assisi Admin Team,

St. Francis Update
Week of May 29th to June 2nd
 Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,
 This weekend, the Church celebrated Pentecost, one of the most important feast days of the year that concludes the Easter season and celebrates the beginning of the Church.  Pentecost is when Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to fill and equip each believer, to work and gather in the spiritual harvest. The Holy Spirit of Love surrounds us all the time - forever. Let us remember God’s powerful Spirit of Love, which brings life, even life out of death.
Dear God,
You sent your Spirit to be with the disciples,
filling them with joy, peace and courage.
May we also be filled with your Spirit,
be brave and share your peace in our world.
Help us to share the good news,
And spread your love to one another.
In Jesus name, Amen!

Locker Clean-up
The last day of classes is June 7! All students will be required to clean out their lockers on or before Wednesday June 7th. Lockers will not be available for use during exams.

St. Francis Update

5/23/2023

St. Francis Update
Week of May 22nd to 26th

Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,

To recognize Jesus in the world, people need to see him through us and our words and actions.  We need to reflect on what it means to be cooperative contributors to our communities. This means, that we are helpful in our homes, friendships, classrooms, teams, and with other groups working for worthy causes.
Let us pray:
God, your Gospel of Life calls us to work
in communion with one another
as we help build Your Kingdom.
Lord, help us to find meaning and dignity in the works we do.
Open our ears to hear your voice clearly
Open our eyes to see your beauty in all
Open our minds so our understanding
may break down walls of fear and prejudice.
Bless our schools and communities
as places of friendship
as places of belonging
and as places of welcome
where everyone feels safe
where everyone has a place
where all are united in You, dear God.
As members of one family in Jesus we continue our day in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

St. Francis Update

5/15/2023

Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,

Catholics have been celebrating a sort of mother’s day since the first few centuries of the Church. The fourth Sunday of Lent, or Laetare Sunday, traditionally was a time to return to your mother church (home parish) and leave an offering. In Catholic tradition, the month of May is dedicated to Mary. Chosen by God above all other women, Mary’s faith and obedience paved the way for the Incarnation. Her example teaches us faith, obedience, humility and most of all, how to love. And so, we invite you to pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, You chose to put yourself—tiny, needy and helpless—into the nurturing and watchful hands of a human mother. Since then, every act of mothering, both physical and spiritual, in every time and every corner of the world recollects Mary’s. Inspired by this example, we, too, honour our mothers and mother figures. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers and nurturers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, honour them always with a spirit of profound respect.
We ask this in your holy name. Amen.

St. Francis Email - May 8-12

5/8/2023

Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,

We recognize the need to remember that to be prepared for unexpected events in our life means we must work together – we pray for good people to work together in unity, peace, and healing.

Let us pray
Our world needs people of integrity:
whose word is their true promise;
who put a solid character above wealth;
who possess opinions, a strong will and a sharp mind;
who will be as honest in all things;
who will make no compromises in living truth;
whose ambitions go beyond selfish desires to the good of all and our earth;
who will not mindlessly follow "because everybody else does it;"
who are true to their friends through good times and bad,
in hardship as well as in success;
who believe that hard work, faithfulness, honesty and responsibility
are the best qualities for winning success;
who are not ashamed or afraid to stand for the truth when it is unpopular;
who can confidently say "no”, although all the rest of the world says "yes."
Our world needs people of one mind and heart to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
Our world needs people of faith who rely on their God’s wisdom.
Amen.

St. Francis Update

5/1/2023

Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,

In our prayer today, we ask St. Joseph for help with all our work and responsibilities.  May we realize that hard work can be very rewarding and bring us closer to God, one another and give us a deeper understand of who “I” am.
We also remember in our prayers all people of Asian heritage this Asian Heritage Month.
So much to pray for and as always, we need help:
In this month devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary we seek her courage as we pray:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Mary, the Mother of God …  pray for us
St. Joseph the Worker …  pray for us.
Amen.

Congrats to Athletes
Many of our students participated in the Subzero provincial tournament in BC. Congratulations to all who participated. Congrats to the U 14 boy who brought home gold.
Congratulations to our school Bocce team who participated in the Special Olympics Unified Bocce competition last Friday in Winnipeg.

St. Francis Weekly Email April 24-28

4/25/2023

Dear St. Francis of Assisi students and families,

The world around us is full of renewal as a warming creation dissolves the winter’s hard cold and breathes spring to life. This past Saturday was Earth Day 2023 whose mission is to build the world’s largest environmental movement to drive transformative change for people and planet. This kind of movement makes real the ongoing power of the Resurrection - making things new again and it is our responsibility to do what we can. In the beauty of the earth, we can see reflections of the beauty of God.

Prayer
Open our eyes,
Open our ears,
To the lesson of creation so that we may learn:
The joy of flowers dancing in the April sun;
The strength of a blade of grass pushing through earth;
The stillness of a northern lake reflecting a full moon;
The insistence of young birds yearning to live;
And to fly …
May the sunlight and the rain be reminders that You are at work renewing the earth.
As a God of renewal, You are ever at work in our lives, too.
Open our eyes to the needed changes in our lives this Spring.
Awaken us to new life and perspective, for this we pray in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Territorial Skills Competition
Congratulations to the St. Francis students who competed in last weeks Territorial Skills competition. Each student brought home a medal - Baking Silver Medal, Welding Silver Medal and Carpentry Gold Medal. All three competitors worked extremely hard to achieve these stellar results!

Professional Development Day
There is no school for students on Monday May 1st due to a Professional Development Day for all staff.

Student Led Conferences
Thank you to everyone who came out to the Student Led conferences last week. It was great to see students sharing and discussing their learning with their parents, and enjoying a cookie as they visited each class. Only six more weeks until review week and exams!

Students have access to free, excellent research databases to use anytime at home or school with their Rapid Identity credentials: student number@yesnet.yk.ca and a password.  If a password reset is required, contact janet.clarke@yesnet.k.ca. When logged into Rapid ID, go to the "digital resources" tile.

Rapid ID  - Office 365 - allows students home access to documents and projects that they have worked on at school. Ensure that you are logged into your account so that your work is saved.

Lastly, Rapid ID gives students a chance to find great e-books, comic books, graphic novels, picture books, French books, magazine and audio books for all grade levels through the SORA app.  Features include:  a built-in e-book reader, an audiobook player, a leveled reading collection, and a running tally of time spent reading and numbers of books read.  Questions? Just ask teacher - librarian Janet Clarke:  janet.clarke@yesnet.yk.ca
